HL Deb 27 July 1978 vol 395 cc1055-6WA
The Earl of SELKIRK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish an up-to-date list of quasi-autonomous non-Government organisations showing membership and remuneration, if any, paid to each member.

Lord PEART

There is no universally acknowledged definition of quasi-autonomous non-Government organisations (QUANGOS) which is a term used by the media and others to describe a variety of bodies to which Ministers make appointments. Information about bodies to which Ministers make appointments and the salaries/fees payable can be obtained from theDirectory of Paid Public Appointments made by Ministers which is published by HMSO, and from the White Paper on Public Boards (Cmnd. 6803). It is intended to publish a new edition of the Directory in early autumn and information upon which an updated version of the White Paper will be based is now being collected.
