HC Deb 27 July 1978 vol 954 c857W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what is his estimate commodity by commodity of the extent by which the various green pound devaluations of the spring have so far increased or reduced food prices for the United Kingdom consumer.

Mr. Maclennan

It is not possible to provide a precise estimate commodity by commodity. However, it was estimated that the phased 7½ per cent. green pound devaluation announced on 1st February would, when fully worked through, increase the level of retail food prices by about 1½ per cent. The devaluation has not yet been implemented for all commodities: it will not apply in the cereals and poultry sectors until 1st August.
