HC Deb 27 July 1978 vol 954 c862W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will list the number of civil servants employed in Stockport in 1974 and 1978; and how this number will be affected by proposed changes at Ministry of Defence establishment, Cheadle Hulme.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

According to records held centrally, there were 1,390 non-industrial civil servants employed in the Stockport area on 1st January 1975, the earliest date for which figures are available, and 1,608 on 1st July 1978. Part-time staff have been counted as half units. Figures for industrial staff are not available centrally.

As my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Defence for the Royal Air Force said in the Adjournment debate on 20th July [Official Report, Vol. 954, cols. 1007–08], no final decisions have been taken about the Ministry of Defence dispersal package to Glasgow and its effect on Cheadle Hulme.
