The table below shows net public expenditure and expenditure per capita, on the health services in the United Kingdom in terms of constant (a) 1970 prices (b) prices used in the 1976 Public Expenditure Survey (Cmnd. 6721) and (c) prices used in the 1978–79 Supply Estimates (HC 230—xi, xii/1977–78). These figures are derived from the National Income and Expenditure Accounts, published by the Central Statistical Office, as this is the only readily available data on a constant price basis which covers the period from 1949. Details of expenditure prior to 1949—the first full year of the NHS—are not available in a comparable form.
