§ Mr. John Mooreasked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing for each year since 1945 (a) the total number of civil servants, (b) the number of civil servants per 10,000 population, (c) the total number of Government employees and (d) the number of Government employees per 10,000 population.
§ Mr. Charles R. MorrisI can answer only for the Civil Service. Total numbers of civil service staff-in-post and the numbers per 10,000 population for each year since 1945 are given in the table below.
Over the 30-year span of the table a number of machinery of government changes are reflected in the Civil Service numbers. Details of these changes are given in the annual publication "Civil 489W Service Statistics". However, the numbers of Post Office employees have been excluded throughout. Part-time staff are counted as half-units.
The number of civil servants for each 10,000 of population is based on the mid-year estimate of home population for the United Kingdom. The estimate for the 1978 population is not yet available.
