§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsLittle research using the techniques of genetic manipulation was carried out in the financial year 1976–77, but it is estimated that about £500,000 of public money was made available for such work in the financial year 1977–78. How much of this was for the furtherance of research into the techniques of genetic manipulation rather than their use cannot readily be determined. The centres where this work was being carried out are those listed in the "First Report Of The Genetic Manipulation Advisory Group" (Cmnd. 7215) and the University of Warwick.
