The total amount made available for research relating to computer-based information systems and services by the British Library's research and development division, and previously by the Department's office for scientific and technical information, during the period 19–1978 was £1,935,000. Of this sum £772,000 was for on-line projects. There has also been expenditure in this field by the research councils and the Natural History Museum.
