The figures have been calculated on the same basis as those given in the reply to the hon. Member for Blaby (Mr. Lawson) on 30th November 1977 [Official Report, Vol. 940, c. 259–60] and on 22nd November 1977 [Official Report, Vol. 939, c. 709–10], except that the figures have now been expressed at May 1978 prices.

The figures for September 1974 and later months have been revised to take account of amendments made to the seasonally-adjusted index of average earnings.
