§ 42. Mr. Clemitsonasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science in devising her plans for the future of education, what account she has taken of likely changes in patterns of employment.
§ Mrs. Shirley WilliamsThe Department tries to gain advance warning of surpluses and shortages of particular types of skilled manpower—through liaison with the industrial training boards and the Department of Employment's unit for manpower studies and by means of its own work on such things as rate of return analysis and graduate first destination statistics. The Department responds to such indicators principally by trying to ensure that prospective students are kept aware of developments in the job market, and that those responsible for courses, curricula and examinations bear these factors in mind. In addition, training and retraining schemes are mounted to meet particular requirements or shortages.
