§ 27. Mr. George Robertsonasked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will bring forward legislation to deal with abuses by car dealers in the light of the recent report by the Director General of Fair Trading.
§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what action he intends to take by way of legislation and public relations to strengthen the campaign mounted by the Director General of Fair Trading against car dealers and garages who cheat the public.
§ Mr. John FraserI am very conscious of the number of complaints in this area, but I should prefer to await the results of the current campaign by the Director General of Fair Trading against unsatisfactory car dealers and garages. This involves, where abuses are found to exist, the Director General withholding, suspending or refusing a Consumer Credit Act licence. Alternatively, he can demand under Part III of the Fair Trading Act, written promises of future good behaviour with the sanction of court action if the promise is either refused or broken.
