HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc711-2W
Mr. Weetch

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people are currently on waiting lists for training opportunities sponsored courses in the Ipswich employment area.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that at 7th July 1978 there were 160 people on waiting lists for TOPS—training opportunities scheme—courses in the Ipswich employment office area.

Mr. Weetch

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what money the Construction Industry Training Board has made available to support training and recruitment to the construction industry in the Ipswich employment area.

Mr. Golding

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the grants made available to employers by the Construction Industry Training Board could not be analysed on an area basis without disproportionate cost. I

Policies", especially fair consideration of disabled people for all vacancies, would help employers in this respect. There is no room for complacency.

understand, however, that the number of young people from Ipswich who were recruited to construction apprenticeships and commenced off-the-job training this year was higher than in 1976–77.

The CITB has, in addition, enabled a number of redundant apprentices to complete their training and has provided financial support of £62,500 in the current year for the Ipswich and district construction training group and the Ipswich construction training centre.
