HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc759-60W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, on the basis of the 1978–79 rate support grant, how many extra teachers she expects to be employed in England and Wales from September 1978; if she will list each local education authority's quota of the total; to date what information she has from each local education authority of the actual number of extra teachers they will be employing; and how far each authority is above or below its quota.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The rate support grant settlement for 1978–79 provided a basis for local authorities to employ 470,800 teachers—full-time and full-time equivalent—in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in the next school year. This compares with 464,970 in January 1978. I have no information about individual authorities' intentions in regard to teacher employment; but I understand that the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy will be publishing later this month its education estimates statistics for 1978–79 which will show the number of teachers expected to be employed by each local education authority. My Department no longer mintains a quota system for the employment of teachers.

Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many names of teachers have been added to list 99 during the last two years; and whether all those teachers have been informed that their names are on the list.

Miss Margaret Jackson

Seventy teachers were added in the two years 1st July 1976 to 30th June 1978, all of whom have been informed. In addition, eight teachers are shown in the list who were excluded from teaching in that period by the Secretary of State for Scotland or the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
