asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the current social wage in England, Wales and Scotland; what it comprises; and what was the comparable figure at constant prices in the years 1975, 1976 and 1977, respectively.

The table below gives estimates of the social wage in England, Scotland and Wales in the current and three preceding financial years. The figures are at constant 1977 survey prices and are based on the public expenditure White Paper Cmnd. 7049. The social wage comprises expenditure on housing, other environmental services, law, order and protective services, education and libraries, science and arts, health and personal social services, social security, food and transport subsidies and concessionary fares.
