HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc796-7W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many miles of road other than motorways in Northern Ireland have been edge-lined; and what conclusions if any have been drawn as to its effectiveness in reducing accidents and edge maintenance.

Mr. Carter

About 140 miles of road in Northern Ireland other than motorways have now been edge-lined. This practice has not been in operation over a long enough period to enable firm conclusions to be drawn on its general effectiveness in reducing accidents and edge maintenance. The Government are hopeful, however, that it will lead to a reduction in the number of accidents.
