§ Mr. McCuskerasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many miles of road other than motorways in Northern Ireland have been edge-lined; and what conclusions if any have been 797W drawn as to its effectiveness in reducing accidents and edge maintenance.
§ Mr. CarterAbout 140 miles of road in Northern Ireland other than motorways have now been edge-lined. This practice has not been in operation over a long enough period to enable firm conclusions to be drawn on its general effectiveness in reducing accidents and edge maintenance. The Government are hopeful, however, that it will lead to a reduction in the number of accidents.
