asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the extent of United Kingdom participation in the current EEC research programme on the recycling of paper.

Mr. Cryer

As is usual in such cases, the Commission has invited tenders for the four main topics in a research and development programme in the field of paper and board recycling. The United Kingdom paper and board industry and

year since 1969, the amount of investment grants paid out to shipowners in respect of ships, listing (a) whether the shipowner was United Kingdom or foreign controlled, and the respective amounts, and (b) whether the ship concerned was built in a United Kingdom or a foreign yard, and the respective amounts of grant.

The information is not available in the form requested. Investment grants towards the costs of ships are payable only when the ship was supplied under a contract entered into before 27th October 1970. Applications made after 10th November 1969 are subject to the Industrial Development (Ships) Act 1970 whereby grants towards the cost of a ship built in a foreign yard may, in general, only be made when the transaction was not to the detriment of the United Kingdom balance of payments. Of the 995 new ships on which investment grant has been paid, wholly or in part, over half were built in the United Kingdom.
