HC Deb 13 July 1978 vol 953 cc767-8W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether, in view of the arrest and fine of the trawler "Goth" off Greenland and the continued fishing in that area of German trawlers, he will discuss with his German counterpart the problems of fishing in those waters.

Mr. Bishop

The Government have asked the Commission for its view on the legality of the Greenland quota legislation and are keeping in close touch with the British company involved. We do not consider that an approach to the German authorities would be of value at this stage.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he has any proposals to take the unilateral quotas imposed by Denmark in Greenland waters to either the European Court or the EEC Commission.

Mr. Bishop

We have asked the Commission for its view on the legality of the current Greenland legislation establishing quotas in Greenland waters. We understand that the Commission is considering this matter and has undertaken further inquiries with the Danish authorities.
