Mr. Kenneth Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what advice his Department has given to the East Midlands Airport Authority about the proposed extension to the main runway at the airport at Castle Donington; and whether there is sufficient need for the proposed extension to justify substantial public expenditure upon it.

Any extension of the runway at East Midlands airport would be subject to the necessary planning procedures. The airport authority

My speech emphasised the need for full and effective consultation with those affected by aircraft noise as well as with the civil aviation industry before major decisions are taken. It referred to actions set out in the airports policy White Paper and to other examples of consultations about Government policies affecting aircraft noise.
