HC Deb 11 July 1978 vol 953 c472W
55. Mr. Hodgson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied with the morale of those who work in the personal social services.

Mr. Ennals

Each local social services authority is responsible for the employ meat of its own social services staff and the morale of the staff will naturally vary in different authorities according to the resources made available and the quality of leadership of the local authority.

Social services staff are dedicated to helping those most in need and their morale will be affected by the availability of resources, the pressures of their work and the opportunities they have for exercising their skills to the full. I am satisfied that, despite the heavy work load many staff have to bear and the gap between need and resources, they generally maintain a high morale and a high standard of service.
