§ Mr.CarterInformation is not available about the incidence in Northern Ireland of smoking or heavy alcohol consumption among women of child-bearing age. Northern Ireland, along with the rest of the United Kingdom, is involved in publicity campaigns aimed at discouraging pregnant women from smoking and excessive drinking. Programmes of health education are provided through the health education officers of health and social services boards, and through the education services of a wide range of voluntary organisations which take a special interest in the problems of smoking, alcoholism and other drug abuse. In addition those who attend for antenatal care are given further warnings about the risks involved.
