§ 30. Mr. David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Employment what studies he has undertaken of the longer-term problems of structural unemployment arising from the increasing shift in manufacturing processes from being labour-intensive to being capital-intensive; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. GoldingThe Unit for Manpower Studies in my Department carries out studies in post-war trends in employment and productivity and takes account of the effects of technological developments. An increase in productivity, whether achieved by technological advance or other means, is necessary to secure a greater share of domestic and overseas markets and hence an economy strong enough to support an expansion of job opportunities in productive and service industries.
