asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether she will open negotiations with the Advisory Council of the Victoria and Albert Museum with a view to reconstituting the museum as an independent trustee body.

If the advisory council has any views to offer to my right hon. Friend, she will give them careful consideration.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether she will now restore the cuts in staff made at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1976 bearing in mind the significant change in the economic climate which has resulted from the Government's financial policies.

No. The Government are committed to a policy of continued manpower restraint in the public service.
