HC Deb 30 January 1978 vol 943 cc32-3W
Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps she envisages as being appropriate to honour the Government's pledge to rectify the university teachers' pay anomaly; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Bradford

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the reason for delay in removing the anomaly in respect of university teachers' salary in view of the fact the air traffic control assistants have been awarded a 14 per cent. salary increase with a promise of an additional increase next April.

Mr. Scott

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when she now expects it will be possible to correct the anomalies relating to the salaries of university teachers arising from the timing of phase one of incomes policy.

Mr. Oakes

I refer the hon. Members to the reply my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. Members for Armagh (Mr. McCusker), Birmingham, Hall Green (Mr. Eyre), Surrey, North-West (Mr. Grylls) and Canterbury (Mr. Crouch) on 25th January.—[Vol. 942, c. 610–11.]

Mr. Bradford

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the reason for delay in removing the anomaly in respect of university teachers' salary in view of the fact that an increase of 14 per cent. in the wages of employees of Ford Motor Company was allowed during the Government's pay policy period.

Mr. Oakes

It is still the Government's policy that pay settlements should not entail percentage increases in average income beyond single figures, with the exception of self-financing productivity deals. Negotiations on a pay settlement for university teachers are at present in progress.

Mr. Bradford

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when she will approve the increase in salary for university teachers.

Mr. Oakes

A salary increase for the university teachers will be approved when current negotiations are concluded.
