HC Deb 17 January 1978 vol 942 cc189-90W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many children qualify for free school meals in Wales: and what were the corresponding figures for 1968, 1972 and 1975; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Barry Jones

The number of children in Wales eligible for free school meals is not accurately known. However, it is estimated that in 1966, the earliest year for which an estimate is available, some 50 per cent. of such pupils in England and Wales took up their entitlement. As a result of publicity campaigns conducted by the Government in collaboration with the local education authorities the proportion rose to 75 per cent. by 1969 and 80 per cent. by 1970. In 1975–76 it dropped to 70 per cent. but is estimated to have recovered to 75 per cent. in 1976–77.

The number of children receiving a tree midday school meal in Wales in May 1977 was 61,624. The October figures for 1968, 1972, and 1975 were 63,424, 62,018 and 56,354 respectively.
