Lord VAIZEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What would have been the number of years of salary paid as a lump sum to an Under-Secretary in the Civil Service retiring on 30th September 1974 after 36 years' service; and whether such a sum would have been tax free.

Lord PEART

Assuming all 36 years to be fully reckonable, 17/20 years of the salary received in the 12 months ending 30th September 1974, less any outstanding contributions for widow's pension. The sum paid would have been tax free.
