Mr. Spearing

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what action she has taken in connection with the recommendations adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 19th session.

Mr. Tomlinson

There were six such recommendations:

  1. (i) Recommendation on the development of adult education. The Department of Education and Science, the Scottish Education Department, the Department of Educa- 756 tion Northern Ireland, and the Department of Employment have all been informed of the adoption of this recommendation and are considering what further action should be taken.
  2. (ii) Recommendation concerning the international exchange of cultural property. The Department of Education and Science has been informed of its adoption and is considering what further action should be taken.
  3. (iii) Recommendation concerning the sate-guarding and contemporary rôle of historic areas. The Department of the Environment has been informed of the adoption of this recommendation and has notified all relevant experts within the Department of its adoption.
  4. (iv) Recommendation on participation by the people at large in cultural life and their contribution to it. The Department of Education and Science has been informed of the adoption of this recommendation and is considering what further action should be taken.
  5. (v) Recommendation on the legal protection of translators and translations and the practical means to improve the status of translators. The Department of Trade and Department of Employment have been informed of this recommendation and are considering what further action needs to be taken.
  6. (vi) Recommendation concerning the international standardisation of statistics on radio and television. The Home Office has been informed of the adoption of this recommendation and has notified the appropriate authorities.

The Governments of the dependent territories have also been informed of the adoption of these recommendations and have been asked to consider sending copies of the recommendations to appropriate Government Departments within their territories for any necessary action.

Copies of these recommendations have been placed in the Library of the House.
