§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give for the latest convenient date the number of casualties, fatal and otherwise, which have occurred in fires and accidents since the firemen's strike, the number of such fires, and the actual or estimated costs of these fires or as much information as may be readily available.
§ Mr. Merlyn ReesUp to 0800 hours on 4th January there had been 161 fatalities, 786 casualties and 42,174 incidents reported since the firemen's strike began on 14th November. Estimates of fire losses since that date are not available, but the British Insurance Association has published an estimate of the cost of fire damage in the month of November—£42.7 million.
§ Mr. Biffenasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will now estimate the additional fire and water damage arising from the use of retained firemen and troops rather than members of the Fire Brigades Union during the current industrial dispute.
