HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 cc101-3W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what sum was allocated by the Government to Strathclyde Region for principal roads in each year from the date of reorganisation of local government in Scotland; and what has been the total sum allocated to date.

Mr. McElhone

Expenditure on roads by Strathclyde Regional Council in each of the years since 1975–76 has been as follows:

£ million
1975–76 26.73
1976–77 28.285
1977–78 25.26
(estimate)
Total 80.275

These figures cover expenditure on all non-trunk roads in the region. Government grants towards expenditure on principal roads in the region have not been made since local government reorganisation and it is not possible separately to identify expenditure on principal roads.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what sum was allocated by the Government to Edinburgh Corporation for principal roads from 1945 until the reorganisation of local government; and what has been the total sum allocated during this period.

Mr. McElhone

Principal roads were first so classified in 1967 following the passage of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1966.

The publication "Highway Statistics", succeeded in 1974 by "Transport Statistics Great Britain", shows that expenditure on principal roads by Edinburgh Corporation between 1967 and 1974—which attracted grant at the rate of 75 per cent.—was as follows:

Expenditure
£000s
1967–68
1968–69 647
1969–70 436
1970–71 1,085
1971–72 830
1972–73 1,293
1973–74 1,157
1974–75 1,449
6,897

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what sum was allocated by the Government to Lothian Region for principal roads in each year from the date of the reorganisation of local government in Scotland; and what was the total sum allocated to date.

Mr. McElhone

1975–76 3.078
1976–77 3.075
1977–78 5.452
(estimate)
