HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 c4W
Mr. George

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the ban under the Public Order Act 1936 is intended to apply to peaceful picketing in the Metropolitan Police district.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The order that has been made by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, with my consent, under Section 3(3) of the Public Order Act 1936 prohibits all public processions other than those of a religious, educational, festive or ceremonial character customarily held within the Metropolitan Police district for the next two months. Processions in contemplation or furtherance of a trade dispute would contravene the order, but the right to attend for the purposes of peaceful picketing is not affected.
