Mr. Wellsasked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the investments in horticultural production of units costing above £50,000 of each board supervised by his Department, the profitability of each, the crops produced and the amounts of grants from public funds in the establishment of them; and from what sources the grants were made.
§ Mr. EadieSo far as I can determine only one of the nationalised industries for which I am responsible conducts any significant, horticultural activities. The Central Electricity Generating Board is experimenting with the use of waste heat for low-cost greenhouse heating systems at Eggborough power station. Tomatoes and winter lettuce are being cultivated. No grants are being made from public funds. The purpose of the experiment is to evaluate the economic potential of such an undertaking.
