HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 cc92-3W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current role of the United Kingdom-based Gurkha battalions; and whether their role is to be changed.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

There is one United Kingdom-based Gurkha battalion, which is available for deployment in an infantry role in an emergency. The battalion's peacetime commitments include the provision of demonstration troops at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and at Brecon. There are no plans to change these arrangements.
