HC Deb 27 February 1978 vol 945 cc16-7W
39. Mr. Clegg

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what help is available from the EEC for persons employed in the fishing industry who lose their jobs through the operation of the common fisheries policy.

Mr. Bishop

Assistance is available from the European Social Fund for schemes to retrain some categories of redundant workers, including fishermen.

Mr. Clegg

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has for special redundancy payments to be made to those persons in the fishing industry who have lost their jobs due to the difficulties caused to the industry by the imposition of new fishing limits.

Mr. Bishop

It would be inappropriate for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment, and Fisheries Ministers to make any such plans in isolation from discussions in the EEC about future fishing opportunities and a common policy for the structural development of the fishing industries of member States.
