HC Deb 24 February 1978 vol 944 c848W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether, in the light of the EEC's offer of a quota of 852,000 tons to the British fishing fleet and the failure of the EEC negotiations, he regards the British fishing effort as currently being restricted to a quota; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Bishop

The Government have not agreed to the quotas proposed by the Commission, and consequently the Britsh industry is not bound by the figures in those proposals.

But as my right hon. Friend told the House on 1st February, the Government are holding talks with the industry on how it might practise self-discipline in its catching operations.—[Vol. 943, c. 470–84.]
