§ 36. Mr. Frank Allaunasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proposals he will make when he attends the Special Session of the United Nations Organisation to make it a more effective body.
§ Mr. LuardOur draft for the programme of action to be adopted by the Special Session proposes a study by the United Nations Secretary-General of how to enhance the security role of the organisation in peacekeeping and the peaceful settlement of disputes. We are also suggesting ways of increasing the organisation's expertise and role in disarmament.
§ 40. Mr. Knoxasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will initiate official discussions with other countries with a view to reforming the United Nations Organisation to make it a more effective body.
§ Mr. LuardAs I informed the hon. Member on 7th December, the United Kingdom plays a full role in the work of the United Nations Special Committee on718W the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organisation. At the committee's next session, which begins on 27th February, we shall continue to work together with other countries, for reforms which will increase the effectiveness of the United Nations.
