HL Deb 21 February 1978 vol 389 c152WA
Lord O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they are taking to ensure that the British insurance industry receives fair treatment in other Member States of the EEC.

Lord ORAM

Various Member States entered the Community with long-established policies for the regulation of their insurance industries which were very different in their nature, but all have accepted the objective of an effective common market in insurance. Some valuable progress has already been made with the adoption of directives, particularly those covering freedom for reinsurance generally and freedom of establishment in non-life insurance. Other directives are under negotiation, especially those seeking to provide freedom of services in non-life insurance and freedom of establishment in life assurance. It is the objective of the Government to seek the adoption of liberal directives covering the whole of the insurance field as speedily as may be and it is working towards this in continuing negotiations in Brussels.

House adjourned at eight minutes before ten o'clock.
