Rossasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many complaints have been made against the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Royal Ulster Constabulary Reserve in each of the last two years; how many of these complaints were found to be justified after investigation; and what was the cost to public funds of the investigation.
§ Mr. DunnComplaints made by members of the public against members of the RUC and the RUC Reserve numbered 1,834 in 1976 and 2,007 in 1977. 149 of the complaints made in 1976 and 68 of those in 1977 were substantiated; most of these were in relation to traffic incidents, neglect of duty, incivility to the public and irregularity in police procedure. 13 complaints made in 1976 and 881 in 1977 are still under investigation.
