Mr. Prescott

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what research contracts his Department has financed for the fishing industry; and what is the total cost.

Mr. Bishop

The total cost in 1977–78 of the contracts placed by the Ministry's Chief Scientist on marine fisheries research and development work is estimated at £6.7 million. Of this, £6.3 million is spent on research carried out by the Ministry's fisheries laboratories, with the remaining £0.4 million being for research commissioned with the Natural Environmental Research Council. The contracts cover the following commissions:
