Pre-harvest fishery research projects are mainly concerned with resource assessment, together with ecological and other studies aimed at improved management measures. The growing importance of fish culture work is recognised, and such work is being supported both in the fresh water and in the coastal lagoon environments, but the exploitation of wild populations of aquatic organisms still generally affords the most favourable economic return where such wild populations exist and can sustain a higher rate of exploitation than heretofore.
