HC Deb 20 February 1978 vol 944 cc448-9W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what is the total number of civil servants employed in Scotland at the latest date convenient for calculation; and how this total compares with the total a year previously.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

It is estimated that there were 71,200 civil servants employed in Scotland at 1st July 1977 compared with 71,400 at 1st July 1976.

Mr. Baker

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what was the number of industrial and non-industrial civil servants at 31st December 1977; and what is his estimate of the numbers of industrial and non-industrial civil servants that will be employed in December 1978.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

At 1st January 1978 there were 567,000 non-industrial civil servants and 171,000 industrial civil servants. The size of the Civil Service must reflect the tasks that are laid on it and it is not possible therefore to give firm estimates of numbers a year ahead. But I would not expect the current numbers to change by more than about 1 per cent. in the coming year.

Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what was the total number of civil servants employed at the latest convenient date; and how this compares with the total a year previously.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

There were 738,000 civil servants at 1st January 1978, some 8,200 lower than the corresponding 1977 total.
