HC Deb 15 February 1978 vol 944 cc239-40W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the estimated life of each nuclear power station in operation, with the date of commencement in each case.

Mr. Eadie

The nuclear power stations operated by the CEGB and the SSEB—which is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland, with their commissioning dates, are listed below.

Berkeley June 1962
Bradwell July 1962
Hunterston A February 1964
Hinkley Point A March 1965
Trawsfynydd March 1965
Dungeness A October 1965
Sizewell March 1966
Oldbury-on-Severn December 1967
Wylfa November 1971
Hunterston B February 1976
Hinkley Point B* September 1976
* The second reactor at Hinkley Point B is not yet commissioned.

The Magnox stations were designed to have an operating life of 20 full power years; that is, years running continuously at designed power rating. However, operating experience in conjunction with studies being made by the generating boards and the UKAEA indicate that this life expectancy will be exceeded. AGR stations have been designed with an operational life of 25 full power years.
