HC Deb 15 February 1978 vol 944 cc231-2W
Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received the report of the Working Party on the Electoral Register established on the recommendation of the Speaker's Conference on Electoral Law; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I have received the working party's report, which is being published today. I am grateful to the members of the working party for the careful study they have made of this subject.

The working party recommends the greater use of computers in the compilation and printing of the register, and suggests ways of improving the quality and completeness of the electoral canvass. It also recommends certain changes in legislation affecting the power of the electoral registration officer to correct the published register and in relation to the qualifying date and publication date for the register.

The working party's report will now be the subject of consultation with the local authority associations and others concerned.
