HC Deb 15 February 1978 vol 944 cc254-5W
Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what application he has received from the Central Region of Scotland Council to approve the building of further facilities at Alloa Academy to concentrate the school on one site and to avoid journeys in all weathers between the current Claremont and Grange sites, what reply he has sent; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. McElhone

School building projects in the financial plan for the period to 1981–82 submitted by the Central Regional Council included a proposed £1.75 million extension to Alloa Academy at the Claremont site to start in 1978–79. This was to replace the Grange building and also provide additional places. In determining the total amounts of block allocations for capital expenditure on school building notified to the council in November 1977, allowance was made for the additional places required, but, as resources for improvement of existing school accommodation are limited at present, not for the replacement of the Grange building. The block allocations did, however, include some provision for school improvement, and it is for the council to decide how the total amounts of these allocations should be used. I understand that it has not yet reached a decision in the case of Alloa Academy.
