§ Dr. SummerskillOn 22nd December 1977 London taxi fares were increased by an average of 10 per cent. over the levels fixed on 13th December 1976. Exact comparisons with fares of other modes of transport are not possible. However, on 17th July 1977 fares on London Transport buses were increased by an average of 17 per cent. over the rates fixed on 20th June 1976, and fares on British Railways London and South-East Region were increased by an average of 16½ per cent. on 2nd January 1977 and by a further 16 per cent. on 8th January 1978. Between mid-December 1976 and mid-December 1977 the fares component of the general index of retail prices, which relates to bus and rail transport within the United Kingdom, increased by 13.9 per cent.; within the fares component the rail transport section increased by 12.6 per cent.
