Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons have been detained in Northern Ireland under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act; how many have been charged subsequently with offences; and with what offences they have been charged.

Mr. Mason

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 10th February 1978; Vol. 943, col. 727–8], gave the following information:

As at 8th February 1978, 421 persons have been held in Northern Ireland under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Acts 1974 and 1976. 220 of these persons were subsequently charged with the following offences:

Murder 79
Attempted murder 32
Conspiracy to murder 5
Explosives Offences 56
Conspiracy to cause explosion 4
Firearms offences 49
Membership of a proscribed organization 26
Burglary 1
Robbery 5
Offences against the person 4
Unlawful collection of information 4
Theft 8
Hijacking 3
False imprisonment 5
Malicious damage 1
Taking part in an illegal procession 1
Withholding information 3
Intimidation 1
Arson 1
Some of the 220 were charged with more than one offence.

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 10th February 1978; Vol. 943, col. 728], gave the following information:

As at 8th February 1978, 18 have been charged. Two persons have been charged under Section 9—failure to comply with an exclusion order; four under Section 10—contributions towards acts of terrorism—and 12 under Section 11—withholding information about acts of terrorism.
