Mr. Litterick

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish in the Official Report a list of the ethnic and national categories in terms of which householders are being asked to identify themselves by his Department's investigators now carrying out the survey of housing and housing occupancy.

Mr. Freeson

Respondents are asked by the research interviewers to indicate for each member of the household(i) whether that person was born in the United Kingdom and (ii) to which of the following 12 categories on a show card they consider that person belongs:

  1. (1) White
  2. (2) West Indian
  3. (3) Indian
  4. (4) Pakistani
  5. (5) Bangladeshi
  6. (6) Chinese
  7. (7) Turkish
  8. (8) Other Asian
  9. (9) African
  10. (10) Arab
  11. (11) Other (please state)
  12. (12) Mixed Origin (please state)
