asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) whether and when it is proposed to close down St. George's Hospital, Hyde Park Corner, completely;
  2. (b) what departments of the hospital have already been closed down, and when did these closures occur;
  3. (c) what departments of the hospital are still fully operational;
  4. (d) as the casualty department is now closed whether they are satisfied that there is adequate hospital capacity to deal with emergencies and casualties;
  5. (e) in the event of a total closure, for what purpose will the existing buildings be used.

(a) No decision on closure has yet been taken. The Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth Area Health Authority (Teaching) propose to issue a consultative document in the near future.

(b) The accident and emergency department was closed on 30th April 1976. The maternity department was transferred to Tooting on 1st August 1976.

(c) The hospital now contains 268 beds and the following departments—general medicine and surgery, gynaecology, orthopaedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic and oral surgery; and an intensive therapy unit.

(d) Adequate accident and emergency facilities are available at other hospitals in central London.

(e) No decisions have yet been taken on the future use of existing buildings at Hyde Park Corner.
