§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will provide a list of all the research projects designed to develop alternative systems instead of the use of animals in toxicity testing and hazard evaluation funded by his Department or by an organisation funded by his Department; and what proportion of his research and development is devoted to such projects.
§ Mr. StrangNone with this specific aim, although my Department has commissioned a number of projects designed to aid the interpretation of carcinogenicity tests, and to evaluate alternative tests designed to establish food safety. Some of these alternative tests presently utilise animal organs, but in these cases, the animals are not the subject of long-term experimentation.
It is not possible to cost separately those aspects of the alternative tests which do not involve the use of animals.
