HC Deb 07 February 1978 vol 943 c512W
Mr. Sydney Irving

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether his Department's survey of vehicle excise duty evasion is complete; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Horam

I have received a preliminary report on a two-part survey, comprising a statistical study using our record of unlicensed vehicles and a sample study of vehicles on the road at 130 places in different parts of the country. Further work is needed to refine and reconcile the results coming from these two different sources: that is in hand, and I will make a further statement as soon as I can.

I am nevertheless satisfied that there would be advantage in concurrently testing the effects of sending computer-produced second reminders to vehicle keepers who do not respond to the initial reminders we already issue. A sample of vehicle keepers will be sent second reminders in the next few days.
