§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he is aware that the compulsory introduction of the tachograph under the EEC regulations will cost £100 million with £34 million per annum recurring costs, plus costs of fees for the administration of the tachograph calibration centres; and to what extent he estimates a rise in the cost of living or price index figures if all these costs are passed on to the consumer.
§ Mr. John GrantIf the costs were to fall proportionately on each component of total final expenditure, the recurring costs of £34 million, which include the fees for the administration of the tachograph calibration centres, would add about £15½ million, or about one-fiftieth of 1 per cent., to consumers' spending. If the introductory costs of £100 million were apportioned similarly and passed on in full in a single year, they would add a further one-twentieth of 1 per cent. to consumers' spending in that year.
