Mr. Bryan Davies

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the number of convictions and the average fine levied for illegal Sunday trading in each of the years since 1967.

Dr. Summerskill

The number of persons found guilty of offences in connec tion with Sunday trading is given in Table I(a) of the issues of "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales" for 1967 to 1976, the latest year for which figures are available. In 1976 the average amount of fine for such offences was £27. Information on average fines in earlier years can only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
