HC Deb 02 February 1978 vol 943 cc293-4W
Mr. Churchill

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what were the principal bodies of expert opinion that he consulted prior to his announcement last week of a decision to construct two new power stations based on the advanced gas-cooled reactor system; and how many of these had expressed themselves in favour of his two advanced gas-cooled reactors solution.

Mr. Benn

The bodies which I consulted included the Electricity Council, the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB), the South of Scotland Electricity Board (SSEB), the National Nuclear Corporation, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate. None of these organisations dissented from the proposal to authorise the CEGB and SSEB to begin work at once with a view to ordering one advanced gas-cooled reactor each as soon as possible. I am placing in the Library of the House a list of those consulted or who sent in their views over the relevant period.
